What is digital health literacy?

Technology has changed the health care landscape in so many ways, especially in access to care and removing barriers to getting care. The expansion of telehealth and telemedicine has made it easier to get quality care from anywhere, including from the comfort of your home.

However, with so much changing so quickly, it can be difficult to keep up with the possibilities. This creates some barriers of its own — particularly in terms of knowing how to work with the technology needed to make virtual health care possible.

“Digital literacy” involves knowing what online resources are available to you, how to find them, and how to use them. So “digital health literacy” refers to all of the above when it comes to getting the health care you need. This may mean learning new skills and using the right tools through the internet, using online portals, and setting up your device’s sound and video settings. You can always ask for help if you’re not sure how!

Sometimes finding the right resources online can be confusing — there’s a lot of information out there. But that shouldn’t stop you from being able to get quality care from home, if that’s best for you.

Understanding your options for getting care in alternative settings, knowing which benefits might be good options for you, making appointments, and finding assistance if needed are all important parts of accessing quality care, and your IBX Medicare plan has the resources to help.
