Tips to get the best care possible
The secret to top-notch health care? Hint: It starts with you. “Your doctor’s ability to determine what’s wrong and find the best treatment depends on communication,” explains Mary Jo Kreitzer, PhD, RN, professor of nursing at the University of Minnesota. Here’s how to take an active role in your health:
Connect with reception. “Tell the scheduler why you need the appointment,” explains Dr. Kreitzer. “Offer enough info so you can be scheduled for the right length of time.”
Get creative when there’s a long wait. “Read, bring along knitting, listen to music, or practice relaxation techniques,” Kreitzer suggests. “You may not have control of your doctor’s schedule, but you can control the way you use your time.”
Be prepared. “Have important details on hand,” she advises. “Write down everything you want to talk about.” Bring along a list of all your current medications.
Put first things first. Ask the most important questions right up front. “Don’t leave important conversations to when your time slot is almost up.”
Listen actively. Write instructions about medication or treatments, and find out whom to call later if you have ques-tions. “Don’t leave unless you understand what to do next.”
