Careers at Independence Blue Cross

Pharmacy Rotation Program

The Independence Blue Cross (IBX) Clinical Pharmacy Team hosts 6th-year Doctor of Pharmacy students from local pharmacy schools as an elective practice rotation.

Program features

The Pharmacy Rotation Program offers student interns a unique experience in a managed care setting and the chance to explore numerous opportunities for pharmacists within a health plan setting.

Student interns will collaborate with pharmacists on the clinical team and complete projects under the clinical team’s supervision, including:

  • Researching disease states and drug therapies in preparation for updating existing and newly implemented policies
  • Analyzing journal articles related to managed care
  • Presenting a journal club to the pharmacy team and making a formal presentation

Upon completion of the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotation, students should have a basic understanding of managed care pharmacy practice, including formulary management, the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, application of advanced drug information and research skills, improved verbal and written communication, and critical thinking and team building skills.

Program dates and details

Each student intern’s start date and completion date vary based on the academic calendar for their respective pharmacy school. The preceptor determines the days and hours worked.
